Burn More Calories This Summer

Get Active!

Did you know that you can create a caloric deficit by not only eating small portions of the right types of foods, but also by being more active throughout the day?

It's true. Take every opportunity to be as active as possible throughout the day. The more active you are, the more calories you'll burn, and the easier it'll be to create a caloric deficit for maximum fat loss.

Exercise doesn't have to be limited to the track or the gym. You can greatly increase the amount of physical activity your body gets (and the total calories you burn) by making small lifestyle changes to be as active as possible throughout the day.

Here are a few simple examples:
- Get in the habit of taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Keep your sport shoes in the car so you're always prepared to get out and be active when you have some extra time. You could take a brisk walk or shoot some baskets after lunch, before returning to work.
- Choose a hike or a bike ride instead of a movie.
- Play with your kids in the backyard rather than dropping them off at the video arcade.

Any extra bit of activity adds up and over the long-run, makes a big difference in how much fat you lose. By simply meeting friends for a walk or bike ride, or a game of tennis or racquetball, instead of "happy hour", for example, will save you 700 or more calories (i.e. burn 350+ calories and save 350+ calories on drinks you would have consumed).

By doing this just once a week, you can lose an extra pound of fat a month! That's 12 pounds of fat a year simply by having fun playing instead of drinking once a week. Of course, if you made this simple change 2 or 3 times a week you could enjoy double or triple the fat loss.

Key point to remember:
*Take advantage of every opportunity to be more active throughout the day to help create a caloric deficit.

Although today's lesson might seem obvious, it's often overlooked. Most people only consider calories with the foods they eat and their exercise routine. But your body is burning calories throughout the day and the more active you are, the more fat you'll lose.

So get (and keep) moving! Have fun being active and enjoy even better results this summer.
Until next time,

Lose Fat While Dining Out at Restaurants!

When dining out - plan and prepare, just as you would at home.

What if you have a scheduled lunch meeting, or you're going out to dinner with friends? No worries! You can eat healthy in just about every restaurant you can imagine if you follow the guidelines, combine the right foods, and stop eating when comfortably full, not stuffed.

For example, at lunchtime, you'll want a lean, complete protein, a natural starchy carb (and/or a little fruit), and a fibrous carb. I can't think of a restaurant anywhere that doesn't offer an option to meet these guidelines.

If you're eating at a Mexican restaurant, for example, you could order fajitas with lean meat and lots of veggies (ask them to go very light on the oil), with a side of black beans and brown rice.

Or if you want to do fast food, go to Subway and have a turkey sub with lots of veggies on whole wheat (hold the mayo but go for the mustard).

Even burger chains now have excellent chicken salads with a variety of veggies and some apple slices as well.

Every restaurant has at least a couple of good options, if you follow the guidelines and order wisely.

Pick a side salad instead of fries, request that your chicken or fish be grilled instead of fried.

Ask that your food be prepared with no oil or butter; request that sauces, condiments, and dressings come on the side. That way, you -not the chef- have complete control over how much you add.

Here's to healthy eating!

The #1 Fat Loss Food!

Your mom was right...eat your vegetables!

Everyone knows they're healthy, but most don't realize just how extremely effective they are for fat loss. Here's why...

1.) They are very low in calories and so perfect for creating that necessary caloric deficit. You'd have to eat 20 large bags of spinach, or 5 heads of broccoli, to equal the calories of just 1 cup of pasta or 1 tablespoon of butter. So, you absolutely do not have to go hungry on tiny portions when youload up on veggies. In fact, it's almost impossible to eat too many. Load'em up! Take grilled vegetables and shrimp, for example. This is a perfect combination of fibrous carbs with protein, which is exactly what you want later in the day. A large portion that fills up your entire plate has only around 250 calories. Compare it to a plate of processed carbs and high-fat foods. You only get to enjoy 1 REALLY small, thin slice of pizza for 250 calories and almost no nutritional value, and none of the energy or protein you need. But when you focus on veggies you can eat a LOT more food, with less calories and a lot more nutritional value.
2.) Veggies are also high in fiber. This is both good for your digestion and fat loss because fiber expands in your stomach, making you feel full and satisfied. A bowl of spinach has 8 grams of fiber, about 1/3 of your daily requirement. Broccoli, green peas, and other green leafy vegetables are also good sources of fiber.
3.) The third reason fibrous carbs are perfect for fat loss is because they have almost NO adverse affects on blood sugar levels. While it's still a good idea to balance veggies out with a protein source, even eaten alone they're okay because they don't cause an increase in insulin.
4.) And finally, they're loaded with vitamins and minerals and other very beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants and phytonutrients, that will help you look and feel better, fight off disease, and improve your overall health. If there's any one type of food that is the most helpful for fat loss, it's definitely vegetables.

Establish a Healthy pH Balance!

Glowing Skin - Weight Loss - Optimal Health

Follow The Steps Below To Alkalize Your Body and Reverse An Acidic Body Terrain

Achieving and maintaining a proper pH balance in your body is vital to your health and well-being. In its natural state, the pH of the body is slightly alkaline. It must maintain this slightly alkaline state for your very survival, and has developed complex mechanisms to ensure that this balance is maintained. Most of us are natural alkaline producers in our early years. This is why many children can get away with eating an imbalanced diet and still be healthy and slender right up until they are in their twenties.

But as we reach our thirties and forties, the majority of us have become overly acidic. That's because nearly everything we are exposed to - foods, environmental toxins, even stress - contribute to an acidic condition in our bodies, and our natural buffer systems become less efficient over time at neutralizing that acid. We go from being in a more or less continuous alkaline state to having chronic excess acidity.

Having pH balance has the following benefits:
*An imbalanced pH affects all cellular activity in the body.
*Normalizes insulin and body weight
*Maintains proper cholesterol levels
*Promotes proper electrolyte activity and efficient heart function
*Normalizes blood pressure
*Protects against premature aging of the body and skin
*Promotes energy
*Promotes bone health, digestive health, and healthy immunity

An imbalanced body pH can be at the root of many common symptoms such as weight gain, constipation, digestive problems, heartburn, headaches, frequent colds, fatigue, bad skin and sleeplessness, just to mention a few.

Is it easy to reach balanced pH?
YES! Understand the Importance of Drinking Good Water:

Water is the driving force behind all forms of life. Our bodies are over 70 percent water and all of our body fluids contain it. Even the food we eat is predominantly made of water. Water adjusts the body's temperature and through urination and perspiration rids the body of toxins. Health authorities recommend that we drink at least 64 ounces (8 glasses) of water per day to attain proper hydration. Most of us are dehydrated and dehydration can lead to great physical impairment. Dehydration is especially prevalent among men and women over forty years of age. For the body to function properly, it is imperative that it be properly hydrated.
Drinking enough water is vital, but it is important to know the type of water we are drinking. Tap water is treated with many chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, which are toxins to the body. Many people drink spring water or bottled water, which is often purified through reverse osmosis, or distillation. However, many of the bottled waters on the market we have tested were actually acidic, as is distilled water. This is because when the minerals are removed the water loses its alkalinity.

The best water to drink is alkalized or ionized pH balanced water, which is produced by running normal filtered water over a positive (anode) and a negative (cathode) electrode. It's that simple!

I personally use and recommend the NaturScience’s Alkalark water bottle to pH balance all the water I drink. It's affordable and easy to use!

Anti-Aging and the Power of Antioxidants

I just recently adjusted my health and fitness goals. I want to maintain my Youth and Vitality!

I’ve made a slight shift in my approach to staying “Fit”. Now that I see what I am capable of achieving on the outside, not only do I want to keep this, I also want to take the steps that allow me to do so by ensuring my internal needs are met as well.

These are the Anti-Aging and Antioxidant Facts that mean something to me and if you have not considered this perspective as of yet, these will be helpful for you to have on hand so you too can be knowledgeable about what it takes to achieve and maintain a fit and youthful lifestyle.

~ Diving in to all the science of this can be complicated so this is my summary of the WHY’s and the Benefits, basically….

What you Need to Know About Anti-Aging and Antioxidants

1. Free Radicals must known fact:

Free Radicals Damage Our Cells!
The more damage that takes place, the faster we age, loss of elasticity of our skin, our joints ache, our vision is affected, we are more prone to disease, etc.

~ What are Free Radicals?

Unstable atoms/molecules in our body that search for missing electrons – so they attack healthy cells to get what they need. On a small scale, this is normal – it is when there is a domino effect that problems begin.

~ Free Radicals are Created by

* Environmental toxins – pollutants, household chemicals, and cigarette smoke
*Physical stressors, such as unhealthy oils, food preservatives, and the wide variety of chemicals that are found in almost all highly refined, processed foods
* Emotional stressors
* Intense Exercise
* Illness/Disease
* Getting Older – a natural consequence of aging!

~ How To Fight Free Radical Damage

The best plan is to make sure you have enough antioxidants in your system – to stop the damage of cells. These molecules then stop free radicals from causing damage.

2. Antioxidants

Antioxidants are found in fresh foods like vegetables and fruits rich in Vitamin A, E, and beta-carotene. Free-radical damage is what antioxidants are supposed to take care of, either by stopping new damage, or by reversing earlier damage caused by free radicals. Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, if our immune system is run down or weakened, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur.

What interested me the most is that free radical damage accumulates with age!

Yep ~ Aging is simply the progression of damage, caused by free radicals.

We age, every second, of everyday. And although we can’t stop the aging process, we can take steps to improve our health as we age.

Want Can You Do?

You can eat more Antioxidant Rich Foods….and choose a wellness system to help fill in the gaps. That’s the purpose of NaturScience’s Alkalark and LimuPlex – These two products form the foundation for health and well being that anyone, regardless of age or illness, can use to support their health. Making it EASY to get the right amount of anti-oxidants in your body to fight the damage of free radicals and prevent the effects of aging.

It's Time To Get Moving - And Some GREAT Reasons Why!

Need motivation? Weight loss is just one of many exercise benefits. We all unconsciously know that exercise is good for us. It is fair to say that everyone wants to be healthy. At the same time, it is probably equally fair to say that most of us are not exercising enough. Nothing else you can do for yourself has more benefits than regular exercise. Sure, exercise burns calories. It tones muscles, tightening up arms and cinching in that waistline. But there are plenty of other reasons to get up and get moving:

1. More energy
This one's hard to believe, but exercising will make you feel more energetic. Research has found that a brisk 10-minute walk gave people more energy than eating a candy bar. How can that be? Exercise boosts a hormone that increases energy. And it doesn't take more than a few workouts before strength and the lungs' capacity to provide oxygen to working muscles improve, increasing stamina -- which is enough to make anyone feel more energetic.

2. Less stress
Just one simple workout can ease stress and anxiety. Exercise enhances the flow of brain chemicals, such as serotonin, that are related to positive mood. Because it also increases core body temperature, it can be as relaxing as a good soak in a hot tub.

3. A sharper mind
Exercise can even spark creativity. Researchers at England's Middlesex University tested creative thinking in a group of 63 volunteers -- once after they'd done an aerobic workout and once after they'd sat around watching a video. After the workout, volunteers in the experiment felt more positive and scored higher on creativity.

4. Healthier arteries
Physical activity boosts levels of high-density lipoproteins, or HDL, the so-called good cholesterol, by as much as 20 percent. HDL helps rid the body of low-density lipoproteins, or LDL, the artery-clogging kind. Studies show that HDL can even pick up cholesterol deposited in arteries and move it to where it won't do harm. Another benefit to the arteries: The level of fat particles in the blood, called triglycerides, falls by as much as 40 percent after a vigorous workout. Exercising converts triglycerides into fatty acids -- the form in which fat can be burned for energy. You burn stored fat each and every time you work out -- the key to keeping weight off. Plus you lower your level of triglycerides in the blood. And the lower your triglyceride level, studies show, the lower your risk of heart disease.

5. Better defenses
The moment you begin exercising, your heart starts pounding and your blood pressure surges, sweeping disease-fighting immune cells out into the blood, where they're able to detect troublemakers like cold or flu viruses. Studies show that people who exercise have 40 to 50 percent fewer sick days than their sit-around-and-do-nothing counterparts.

6. Better night sleep
If you suffer from poor sleep, daily exercise can make the difference. The natural dip in body temperature five to six hours after exercise may help to fall asleep. Research has found that regular exercise provides improvement in general quality of sleep, quicker sleep-onset, longer sleep duration and feeling rested in the morning.

7. Bone strength
An active lifestyle benefits bone density. Regular weight-bearing exercise promotes bone formation, delays bone loss and may protect against osteoporosis.

8. Blood pressure lowering
The ways by which exercise can cause a reduction in blood pressure are unclear, but all forms of exercise seem to be effective in reducing blood pressure. Research shows that regular exercise decreases blood pressure in approximately 75% of hypertensive persons with an average decrease of 11 and 8 Hg mm for systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively.
Regular exercise may decrease blood pressure in overweight and obese persons even without changes in body weight.

To achieve maximum benefits, I recommend that you engage in at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise per day. A mix of traditional cardiovascular training and resistance training produces the best results. Note that if you are unable to devote a full 30-minute block to exercise, you can fulfill your daily requirements with several shorter stints of training.

What are you waiting for? Get out there and get moving!

Making Your Fitness New Year's Resolution Stick!

Hoping to make and keep a New Year's Resolution? Make sure to plan ahead to be successful. And while many people out there truly look upon the New Year as their opportunity to commit, too often their efforts end in defeat. It’s not that they plan to fail it’s that they fail to plan. So in order to really keep this New Year’s resolution, here are five easy-to-do, sure-fire ways that can help anyone meet their personal goals.

  1. Make a 30-Day Challenge - At least say you'll TRY it for 30 days... In your mind that's easy to digest, right? You can do that. The trick is that after 30 days the habit will be set into you and it will be easy to keep on going.
  2. Journal - A great way to stay committed is to keep a little resolution journal. At the end of the night, note your progress for the day and what your goals are for the next day. Planning like this gives you a clear guide to success.
  3. Don't Give Up When You Slip Up - Yes, you will fall off the wagon. The trick is to get back on quickly, don't risk losing all the hard work you've done so far. Acknowledge you messed up and move forward fast before you can allow yourself to "justify" failing.
  4. Be Realistic - If you set unrealistic goals you won't achieve them, you'll get upset and you'll give up. Be REALISTIC, set goals you can achieve. Take one small step a day, and by the end of next year you'll realize you've came pretty darn far.
  5. One At A Time - Don't try and bite off more than you can chew. Shedding pounds is the most popular resolution - if that's going to be yours, great! But that's a lifestyle change which is a big thing. So until you are well and truly underway, don't add another resolution to your list.

So many people give up on their resolutions so quickly. And that's a great shame. Stick to yours and see it through. Make 2010 a life changing year. You'll be glad you did!
